Abbreviations
SET - Subendothelial tumor
Long designation
SET = Subendothelial Tumor ≈ Submucosal tumor (SMT)
Meaning
Describes a mass that is hidden "under" normal mucous membrane (endothelium or mucosa) - a normal tissue sample (biopsy) therefore usually does not reach the deeper SET.
The term "tumor" is by no means to be equated with a malignant carcinoma, but in medicine is only a descriptive term for a solid mass.
SET often occurs in the stomach or duodenum and is usually benign in nature. Depending on the configuration, you will be referred to a center for further evaluation. Endoscopic ultrasound transferred.
