Preventive medical check-ups in Germany: an overview

Germany attaches great importance to prevention and preventive healthcare. The healthcare system offers a wide range of examinations specifically aimed at detecting illnesses at an early stage in order to prevent serious health consequences.

Screening examinations in the areas of the digestive tract including the liver, gall bladder and pancreas (gastroenterology) and the kidneys and reproductive organs (urology) are recommended from middle age, i.e. from the age of 40.

Gastroenterological screening and early cancer detection: colonoscopy, gastroscopy and ultrasound of the abdominal organs

The Colonoscopy is an examination of the large intestine and is primarily used for the early detection of bowel cancer. According to international guidelines, this examination is recommended from the age of 45, especially if there is a family history of the disease.

The examination of the stomach (gastroscopy) and the abdominal organs (ultrasound) are used for the early detection of cancer, i.e. risk situations should be recognized early or in good time.

Why a colonoscopy?
  • Early detection of colorectal cancerColorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, but it is very treatable if diagnosed early.
  • Recognizing and removing polypsColonoscopy can detect polyps (growths) in the bowel and remove them immediately before they develop into cancer.
  • Intestinal health in generalColonoscopy is also a good way of checking the general condition of the bowel and detecting potential inflammatory diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
How does a colonoscopy work?
  1. PreparationBefore the examination, you must empty your bowels completely using a laxative. This is an important step as the bowel must be as clean as possible for a thorough examination.
  2. InvestigationDuring a colonoscopy, a flexible endoscope (camera) is inserted through the anus into the bowel. The examination usually takes about 20-30 minutes and is often well tolerated. You will usually be given a mild sedative to help you relax.
  3. After the examinationAs a rule, you can leave the practice within a short time after the examination, but you should ensure that you do not drive alone if sedatives have been used.
How much does a colonoscopy or gastroscopy cost in Germany?

As an international patient, you will generally have to bear the costs yourself, as most private health insurance companies do not offer reimbursement abroad. The prices for a colonoscopy including sedation and, in particular, the histopathological tissue examination are between 1,200 and 1,800 euros, for a gastroscopy between 1,200 and 1,500 euros and for an abdominal ultrasound between 400 and 600 euros.

Urological screening in Germany

Urological screening is used for the early detection of diseases of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs, in particular prostate cancer, prostate enlargement, kidney stones or urinary tract infections. Regular urological examinations are recommended for men aged 45 and over.

Why a urological check-up?
  • Early detection of prostate cancerProstate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Early detection can significantly increase the chances of recovery.
  • Prostate enlargementEnlargement of the prostate can lead to urinary problems and complications such as bladder emptying disorders or kidney damage.
  • Checking kidney functionThe examination helps to detect kidney stones, inflammation or other functional disorders at an early stage.
  • Urinary tract infections and disordersThese can affect the quality of life and often require early treatment.
How does urological screening work?
  1. Medical historyThe urologist will first ask you about your medical history in order to identify possible risk factors for urinary tract and prostate diseases.
  2. Physical examinationA digital rectal examination (DRU) of the prostate and testicles is an important part of the examination. The doctor feels the prostate through the anus to detect hardening or enlargement.
  3. Ultrasound: An ultrasound can be performed for a more detailed examination of the prostate, kidneys and bladder.
  4. Blood testsAn important marker for the early detection of prostate cancer is the PSA (prostate-specific antigen). An elevated value can indicate a disease, but does not necessarily have to be an indication of cancer.
  5. CystoscopyIn risk situations for further clarification in our ultra-modern endoscopy using high-resolution equipment.
How much does a urological check-up cost in Germany?

The cost of urological screening depends on the tests and examinations carried out. As a rule, a complete examination (including PSA test, ultrasound and digital rectal examination) costs around 600 euros. If further tests are required, the costs may be higher.
